1: Methodology

Compressed air sampling device

The compressed air was sampled using the TRI air sampling device in the photo to the right. The device is used for sampling particulate, oil mist, dew point, and hydrocarbon content.

CR1: The sample taken at compressor room 1 was taken in the header between the compressed air supply system and the entrance to the distribution loop.

CR2: The sample taken at compressor room 2 was taken in the header between the compressed air supply system and the entrance to the distribution loop.

CR3: The sample taken at compressor room 3 was taken in the header between the compressed air supply system and the entrance to the distribution loop.

MD1 Nosepiece: The sample taken at MD1 Nosepiece was taken on the mezzanine in the moulding area after the dryer and filters and before the entrance to the paint area

MD1 Assembly: The sample taken at the MD1 Assembly area was taken at the discharge of the point of use inline filter installed in the air line feeding one of the production cells.

2: Analysis

The full results from the compressed air samples can be found at the end of the report. The dew point in the sample report represents the dew point of the compressed air at the pressure of the sample (6 PSIG). The dew point of the compressed air had to be calculated using the formula P1/P2=e1/e2 where P is compressed air pressure and e is Saturation Vapour Pressure found from the table below.

a.Dew Point – The dew point of the compressed air was in the ISO Class 4 to ISO Class 5 range. To be able to bring the dew point to a Class greater than 4 a different drying process must be used. The most common drying process to bring dew point to below the freezing point of water is through the use of a regenerative desiccant dryer. With the use of a dryer with a dew point setting of -100 F the ISO quality with respect to dew point can be brought to Class 1.

b.Oil Mist – The oil mist content of the compressed air was in the ISO Class 1 to ISO Class 2 range. There are two options to improve the quality of the compressed air with respect to oil mist. The first is to replace the current oil flooded rotary screw air compressors with oil free compressors. The cost to replace all of the current compressors will be in the magnitude of $400,000 - $500,000. The second option that is being used in MD1 assembly is point of use filters. The sample taken at the MD1 assembly area has the highest quality with respect to oil content.

c.Particle Size – The particle size could not be determined by using TRI’s air sample. The total particle concentration was determined to be in the low to almost non-existent range. Once again, the sample taken at MD1 assembly had the lowest particle concentration by using the point of use filters.
